Day 1 of our Arctic 2010 adventure started with a sunny, warm and slightly hazy morning. A full tank of avgas, enough baggage to take us to full maximum weight and we were off.
The scenery over the Bruce Peninsula, Manitoulin Island, and the North Channel of Georgian Bay up to Elliot Lake gave us its usual spectacular show. From Elliot Lake to our first fuel stop at Marathon was over wilderness. Brampton to Marathon was a 3 hrs 15 minute flight.
From Marathon heavy rain and thunderstorms blocked our direct route to Kenora, so we diverted North around it. This was true wilderness, taking us over the bottom of Lake Nipigon. Very low clouds meant we were "scud running" under ceilings as low as 500 feet, and getting bounced around by strong winds. After a couple of hours of this we took a break by
landing at Dryden.
The stop at Dryden was short, because thunderstorms were closing in. Off we went through some rain into clearing skies behind the front. By the time we arrived in Kenora we had blue skies and warm weather. Rhonda and Wes Rapinda were at the airport to welcome us.
Tomorrow we will spend in Kenora. Plan to be back in the air on Friday.
