November 15 2008 - Can Tho and Mekong River Delta, Vietnam
We booked a trip to the Mekong Delta when we got back, 2 days, 1 night. It was really well organized, some of it was just amazing, and some of it was kinda boring. We boarded a packed bus and drove for like 4 or 5 hours, making the usual tour stops and pot making factories and furniture factories. They eventually loaded us onto some small boats, maybe 10 people strong, and took us onto the river. No wonder it’s called “big muddy”. we went to some of the little islands where we were herded onto donkey drawn carriages. then onto motorcycle drawn carriages. We would get sit down meals along the way, at one of them our guide whipped out a freakin boa constrictor and asked if anyone wanted to “wear it”. It got all the way though our group and I was the first to ask for it. pretty cool, again highly recommend it. then i passed it off to linds.
That night we stayed in Can Tho, the bus took up the entire hotel. it was a real dive, dicey at best. it had poured rain on our drive to the hotel, and the streets were flooded, the water even went up into the hotel front. haha. early the next morning we had a quick breaky then got on boats to go to the floating market, probably the highlight of the whole trip. linds went ape taking pictures of the little kids, and in the end gave one of them her weird green watch, which made the kid so happy. we pretty much just watched as typical business went down, people buying and selling produce they had grown or acquired. we just sat there, occasionally boarding other people’s boats to buy fruit, and watched. Then after about an hour and a half of that, we were on the bus on on the way back into town for one last night at Red Sun.
Our flight back was absolutely packed, not a single seat empty. Sweet trip. Wanna do it again.
