Bit of a late start today. After always being on the go during the entire Cambodia-Vietnam tour, I decided to take things down a notch. Rather than getting up early and running around town, I slept in until 9:30 am. Wow! I know! I haven't slept that long for about a month. It felt extraordinarily good.
In the afternoon, I decided to make my way to Siam Square. A place I affectionately call "The Mecca of Shopping". Prior to today, I really hadn't ventured too far out of Bangkok's Banglamphu area. All my attention has been gravitated towards Khao San Road and the surrounding area. "Surely there must be more to Bangkok than a single road", I thought.
And I thought right.
My intentions were to walk there, but I was passing by a canal boat and decided to catch a ride to Siam Square. Probably the best 5 baht I have ever spent. It was pretty crowded though and I could tell that the boat had not been designed with "lanky Chad" in mind. The neat thing about the boat was the way it could transform at the pull of a lever. When we went under low-lying bridges, the captain just flicked a switch and the roof dropped to within inches of the passengers heads. "Go go gadget canal boat!"
Siam Square is huge. I decided to focus all my attention on MBK. MBK (not sure what it stands for as the Thai word is too long and complicated for this cowboy) is basically a huge 7 or 8 story mall. I never made it past the fourth level, so I'm not sure how many more were above it. It didn't really matter though as everything anyone could ever want was on the first few floors. Floors 5 to 8 were just a bonus, I guess.
Despite all the possibilities, I bought nothing. I strayed home on my own and found my way back to the hotel after a little over an hour of walking.
Tonight was another quiet night. I said to myself when I arrived in Bangkok that I was going to go into Detox mode. That's exactly what I've done... so far.
