After passing through customs in Colombo and collecting my backpack, I exchanged some US dollars and caught a cab to my hotel in Negombo.   The cabbie took me to the wrong one at first (very similar name) and lucky for me he was still in the driveway... second time lucky I made it to the right place.    The hotel managed to find me a room that was ready (it was only 9.30am and check-in wasn't until 2pm).   I organised some things then had a nanna nap - 5 hrs later i woke up and got ready to explore.

Being only a 30 minute walk, I decided to wake into Negombo and have a look around.  I found the old Dutch Fort (it has a small entrance marked 1678).  In front of it is a cricket ground that had about 10 games being played - they definitely love their cricket!    The beach nearby is used as a fish market & did it stink...  I didn't stay for long but made my way to the main part of town and stocked up on snacks and water.   Needless to say i ended up getting lost so after aimlessly walking around for an hour I decided to get a tuk tuk back to my hotel for the bargain price of US $1.    I didn't see 1 other Westerner today and was not surprised that their were many stares aimed in my direction.      The town is very similar to those I have seen in Vietnam & Cambodia, with bikes, cars, motorbikes & trucks all tooting each other.
I did see a big gathering at a church - must have been the 6pm Sat night mass - many more females to males.  Back at the hotel i wasn't that hungry so a can of spag and an apple for tea I was ready for bed again.
