We caught a mini van from Hoi An to Hue, via the Hai Van Pass. When Vietnam was divided in two, this used to be an important checkpoint and witnessed quite a few battles - the Quiet American film is apparently based there.  Hai Van Pass is a high mountain, and was within a massive cloud when we arrived for a stop off, so was obviously very cold; as a result, we needed to wear our fleeces!  Crazy as we were in 41 degree heat only 10 days ago!!

We reached Hue which was cloudy and rainy.  Not much to say really as it was a grey city (the capital of central Vietnam) and full of concrete buildings.  The only thing of note was the citadel.  The citadel was built by the Vietnamese royal family and has strong Chinese influences in its design.  It is a massive complex some 10km in size, and originally had some 200 buildings within its moated walls.  However a lot of these buildings were bombed during the Vietnamese wars so there are only a handful left.

Our favourite bit of the citadel was a man made lake within it where you could feed the massive Koi fish.  These fish were so clever that if you stood over a bit of water and pinch your hands together they would automatically swim to your spot in anticipation of feeding.

From Hue we caught our last overnight train in Vietnam to Hanoi - a 14 hour train journey!  Again we enjoyed cold takeaway pizza and beer while playing games.
