Water pump fixed now off to San Pedro about 8hrs ride from Arica but I have to try and make up some time that I have lost. Going thru the Atacama desert tested the water pump out and there was the problems with it, arrived in San Pedro about 8.00pm and checked in for 3 nights. Next day rode out to the Valley of the Moon with the name saying it all, it was just like a lunar landscape, walking around on the rocky outcrops you can hear the earth cracking with the heat of the sun expanding the already formed cracks on the surface. Rode out to Lago Chaxa which was about 140kms round trip to see the salt lake with the pink flamingoes and then went to the base of one of the many volcanoes that dot the landscape around San Pedro.
San Pedro itself is a great place for tourists with plenty of hostels & restuarants and a relax feel to it, meet 5 guys from Brazil touring around on their bikes and had to have a couple of cerveza's with them, they spoke english and were great blokes.
Early start this morning getting up at 3.30am to be picked up to go to the El Tatio Geysers about 80kms north of San Pedro. Got there about 6.30am and it was about minus 5 degrees brass monkey cold being 4500 metres above sea level in the Andes. The geysers are above an active volcano and every morning at daybreak they erupt with hot water and steam then die down thru the day hence the early start.
