Today was our last full day of our vacation. During our trip to Boston yesterday, my cousin suggested that we visit the Newport Mansions (the Breakers house specifically). We got up lateish today, had breakfast, and began the drive to Newport. What a cute city (town?) Newport is. It's much like a big city with its shops and buildings and cobblestone sidewalks only its much more homey than most cities. I'd love to stay in Newport for a few days in the future.
We parked at a Stop & Shop so my sister and fiancee could use the bathroom and my other sister could get cash from the ATM. We decided to walk to the first house since we had drove past it and it didn't seem too far away. The first house was called The Elms. We weren't sure if we could buy tickets to the Breakers house but we walked inside anyway only to be told that we could only buy tickets at the Breakers house. Although we didn't tour the Elms house, the front entrance was incredible.
We walked back to our car and drove to the Breakers house since it was far away. We got our tickets ($16) plus coupons for free appetizers at a couple of restaurants (although we didn't use them) and were almost immediately taken inside the house (which I was grateful for because it was super windy). Tours are about an hour long and begin every 15 minutes. We were taken to a side room with literature and pictures hanging. This was the gentlemen's room. Our tour guide came and gave us a brief history of the family before we walked around the house. We were shown the bedrooms, bathrooms, library, an entertainment room, the dining room, the breakfast room, the balcony, the kitchen, and much more that I can't seem to remember. It was a good history lesson and the rooms were amazing.
After the tour, we walked around the outside of the house where we saw the childrens' playhouse and the backyard. FYI, pictures aren't allowed inside but you can take them outside (including on the balcony). I have to say that although it was really interesting, I don't think it was worth the $16 we each paid.
We drove home after the tour and ate lunch there. All of us went to the Christmas Tree Shop where we bought a bunch of neat things. I love that store! Our plans were to leave to my cousin's house in New Hampshire at 6pm so we ordered half cooked Town Spa pizzas and packed our stuff. After saying our goodbyes, we picked up the pizzas and drove to New Hampshire. We ate our pizzas and watched TV and then went to bed.
