I finally got out of Patagonia. San Rafael is in the region of Cuyo famous in Argentina for its vineyard. For me, growing grapes there is still a mystery. The place is very dry. The plants hardly grow. In the landscape you will only find steppe. Anyway, it is very sunny so it is a good place for good grape. That's why a lot of people started to make wine using irrigation and watering thoroughly the plants. Water is scarce. I was quite tired from the cold and my late arrival, so I decided to take it easy and rest a bit in San Rafael. At least, there was a lot of Argentine tourist in the hostel and not so many "gringos". I had a lot of recommendations about my next destinations from them.
I spent a day visiting the bodegas and tasting their wine. We went to Bianchi's, Rivier's and Suter's. I don't know a lot about wine and I could visit the bodegas in France but never did it. And I learnt many things about how to produce wine and realized also that is not my favorite drink at all. It makes me sleep :). And I need 4 days to finish a bottle if I drink it on my own.
Main attraction around San Rafael is the caņon del Atuel. A long canyon used to produce hydroelectricity where you can see beautiful, funny and interesting rocks. The landscape is great. The only problem is that doing the excursion in the bus you can't stop whenever you want, wherever you want to take the best pictures. I was quite disappointed then.
My last day in San Rafael, I used it to rest, cut my hair and wash clothes. That's also part of the traveler life ;-).
