The elation of setting foot on Italian soil was dampened slightly by an aching body, lack of sleep, and extreme hunger but overall it was still pretty amazing. Had some problems at the airport trying to get a ticket refunded and spent quite a bit of time hauling around 200lbs of luggage for about 2 hours, only to get a number to call.
After getting my phone number we caught the shuttle to the airport train station to catch the train to the Roma Termini - basically the Grand Central Station of Rome. This was one of my first lessons on the Italian mentality (at least at the train station). Gerald and I were waiting with our four large bags and two, rather heavy, carry-ons among about 50 other people. When the doors opened for the train all 50 people crammed in around us trying to get through the doors at the same time. There was no courtesy at all - people were trying to get off the train while people were trying to push in. It was madness.
We took a 30 minute ride to the termini where we boarded the next train to Formia, about seven miles from the flat. Unfortunately I fell asleep during this train ride and didn't wake up until we were three stops from Formia. When I did wake up however the landscape was beautiful. There were mountains with villas on top and beautiful terrain. I was only able to get some snap shots through the train windows but hopefully\I'll get to go back and get some more later.
