We decided to turn back SW to the Lynchburg area to visit Steve, Tanya and Shelby, who were our neighbors in Maui for a couple of years, and they recently moved to Lynchburg.

Our decision was also based on the fact that the DC area has been hard hit by some very bad storms recently and some areas were still without electricity, etc. So we figured we'd give them more time to dry out before heading that way.

We met up and had a nice visit with Steve, Tanya and Shelby at a fun Wine, Dog and Horse Festival near the Peaks of Otter area along the Blue Ridge Parkway and yes, the mountains definitely do look blue.

Driving around the Blue Ridge area reminded us of our infamous Road to Hana on Maui. Hundreds of twists and turns, with beautiful scenery and vistas from many lookouts, etc. We also saw many deer and even a black bear that ran across the road just ahead of us. Unfortunately, even if I had my camera ready, it happened too fast to take a photo, but was exciting to see.

The Blue Ridge Parkway starts, on the south end near Asheville, NC and ends, on the north end, at the Rock Fish Gap, near Waynesboro, VA. Then it becomes the Skyline Drive, which runs northeastward along the crest of the mountains for another 105 miles, ending at the town of Front Royal on the Shenandoah River.
