Well over a decade ago, I was offered an English teaching job at a private in Recife, Brazil. I had a wonderful student--who went on to become a friend--from there, but ultimately I didn't take the job and went to Barcelona instead. (A choice I have been forever comfortable with.) So when I booked my award ticket (business class, all on frequent flier points, baby!) into Cordoba, Argentina, I made sure my return flight to North America left from Recife--I wanted to finally see it!

I wasn't actually in Recife long. I arrived early in the morning by overnight bus from Salvador and then had to suffer the worst, most crowded train experience of the trip making my way (with my enormous rucksack) into the city. I hightailed it to Olinda, the quiet (very, in the off season) colonial town just outside of Recife. Besides that, I went into Recife one Sunday and saw a movie. Flying out was nice, as Recife has a beautiful, new, modern airport.

Olinda? I enjoyed its very laid back style--this part of Brazil, the Northeast, is known for it's languor--and its galleries, and there was ample opportunity for a couple more caiperinhas before leaving the country. It wasn't the colonial splendor of Minas Gerais, nor anything remotely as incredible as Salvador...but it was green and peaceful and not an unattractive spot to wind down after nearly six months on the road.
