With our leased Peugeot 206, we charged the Spanish windmills and castles like the heaviest tourist buses. We galloped from one heritage site to another, burning wide holes in our pockets at every service station stop. To break the monotony of 50,000 horizon-stretching rows of olive trees and vast plains of Spring-green patchwork, we devised a new car traveling game. We identified a handful of obscure 80's songs which were repeatedly played on several national radio stations, so we created a point scheme for songs like "Moonlight Shadow," picked our winners carefully, and kept tally. It was a close contest every day!

We treated ourselves to four overnight stays at Paradores, nationally-run hotels with a higher level of comfort than we are accustomed to and which are usually built around buildings of historical significance such as castles and convents. We highly recommend that anyone traveling to Spain treat themselves to a few nights stay too--the breakfasts were really a treat as well. Reza especially liked the jamon serrano and tortilla espanola as his morning meal!

A special mention and thank you to my friend Oliver's mother, Patricia Beckstrom, and his brother Charlie, in Madrid, who tolerated our comings and goings, accomodated us like royalty, and helped us recharge or batteries for this last leg of our journey.

As for Morocco, well, it was back to the Third World, dodging taxis and donkeys alike, but it was worth it for a few days of great souq shopping and a stay at a riad (courtyard house) in Marrakesh!

We are in France right now, and we will update you soon on Paris and Normandy. A tout a l'heure!
