Quick breakfast at YHA before everything was packed away. Left for Heathrow to collect the car from Sixt — a Vauxhall Meriva. Pete is the driver, being the only one who could drive a manual.
First stop was Winchester. We parked near Wolvesey castle's ruins, next to Winchester College. Walked to Winchester Cathedral where there was a busy Christmas market. Had a mine pie and coffee, although, initially unbeknownst to me, the mince pie was a sweet and small Christmas fruit mince pie. Climbed up High St to see where the old castle at Winchester was. Went into the Great Hall which remains to this day, where Sir Walter Raleigh was sentenced to death and the round table of King Arthur has been hung.
Came back down High St (Pete bought a beanie) and strolled through the Abbey Gardens, by the local river and the old city walls to the car.
Drove to Salisbury next. Left our things at the YHA (we got a six bed dorm to ourselves) and walked a few minutes into town and into another Christmas market (these are Christmas themed crafts market with some food stalls essentially). Explored the town a bit before seeing the great gothic Salisbury Cathedral, which must have one of the greatest spires in England. We did not go in though as there was a service about to start.
We walked back into the town centre to a Tesco's for groceries, and back to the YHA to cook up some pizzas and vegetables for dinner. Made our beds and showered. Played cards and went to bed.
