The guesthouse we were staying in was wonderful; the owners Aruna and Chai were so welcoming and helpful and we felt like we were a part of their family. They had 2 young sons who were extremely playful and kept us entertained throughout our stay. When we arrived Aruna sat down with us for half an hour and told us about the restaurants, bars and the beaches of Koh Lanta and how they are all different. The main area where all the hotels are is the north of the island and the further south you venture, you are rewarded with better beaches. As it was a fairly small island we decided to hire a Scooter so we could visit some of these beaches
As Shilan and Kavita both dive, we joined on the boat with them to Koh Ha to do some snorkelling. The experience was so much better than Phi Phi Islands; the boat stopped in an isolated area and the sea life was wonderful to see; lots of different fishes, turtle, octopus, sea snakes and coral. We had a guide come with us who pointed out all the rare sea creatures and showed us different types of coral. There was also an isolated little beach with some caves which we swam upto. It was a wonderful feeling to be the only ones on the beach not see another person for miles (as all the divers were underwater). After the trip, we headed back to the beach to swim and have some massages on the beach which were amazing – the best backdrop while you are having a massage. We also had dinner at one of the many restaurants on the beach where the food was amazing; much better Thai food than we had anywhere in Phuket and they had fire-dancers entertaining throughout the evening.
The next day we made use of our scooters to drive around Koh Lanta and see the secluded beaches. Armed with a map from Aruna, we headed off in search of a tiny shack called Shanti Shanti which had amazing home made ice cream (so we were told). It certainly lived up to expectations! We had cinnamon flavoured ice cream with a nutella crepe and it was delicious! We got talking to the owner who French and had been travelling for 15 years before making Koh Lanta his home and starting the café – the travelling life definitely appeals to us!
Next we headed off to find a secluded beach and go for a swim
The week in Thailand flew by and we headed to back to Bangkok for Shilan and Kavita to fly home and for us to travel on to Cambodia.
