This journey, takes me by boat from my new favorite city of Stockholm, Sweden back across the Baltic Sea to Riga Latvia. I made a complete circle around the Baltic with the help of a young lady in Tallinn, Estonia. She hooked me up with great tix on 3 different boats, so I could get to Helsinki, then to Stockholm, then back here. I really love traveling by ship. I could not believe the amount of traffic on the Baltic. Leaving the lovely narrow waterways of Sweden, there was one ship after another after another, almost as if it were tarmac at an airport. I think ships are my favorite way to travel. You can walk around, look at the scenery from the observation deck, get pretty decent food - much better than on planes anyway - and it is at a slower pace. It contributes its own share of pollution, but nowhere near the hydrocarbons of an airplane. Though, because I'm meeting a friend in Vienna, I must fly rather than take a bus or train, which would be preferable. In any case, I'm delighted to cross the Baltic via Sweden's gorgeous tree lined waters, with lovely homes and rock strewn shores. Reminds me a lot of coastal New England. I hope to be back here again, to explore more of this fabled land of Vikings and trolls.
