Heading out from Wales up to England, I drove through the American style motorway to my cousin's house in Leigh, between Liverpool and Manchester. Having fun reminiscing with my cuz, we head out to explore the area. I drive us to Chester, a gorgeous little town on the Welsh border. It has Tudor style buildings, a medieval wall around the city and a beautiful cathedral. We have beers in John Lennon's mum's birthplace, The Bear and Whistle pub along the River Lee. Cheers! Next we head out to insanely beautiful estate of Speeke Hall, a National Trust property near Liverpool. We find out a daughter inherited the home and because of the laws back in the 1600's, she decided to stay single so she could retain ownership of the house. Back in those days, if she married, everything would go to her husband, and the house would no longer be in her name. Smart lady. There was also a ghost story about the place, that a baby was thrown out the window. I asked if had anything to do with bath water, and decided in any case that's where the saying came from....really cool to explore all these old houses and their histories. Dark wooded walls, inlaid ceilings, and incredibly gorgeous antiques filled these homes. The gardens and surroundings were even better, with an almost enchanted feeling about them, a private woods just for the homeowners. Quite a refreshing oasis from modern day life!
