What I did
The Wagon Wheel Restaurant
A few hours out on the road, we grew hungry.
This seems to happen earlier than you might think.
Maybe it was the first day, maybe it was the enticing idea of our last great chance to enjoy the comfort of home made New England ice cream, combined with the urgency for a clean bathroom, or the huge wagon wheel out front. We decided The Wagon Wheel Restaurant in Gill was a must stop, even though we were only one state out on our journey west.
Sometimes, you just know it's going to be good. I could tell by the line of people at the dairy bar window, and the local nature of the cars in the lot, that this was the place we needed to have our supper. Hand made ice cream! Freshly made baked goods! Local farmers! Veggie options! Microbrews!! This place couldn't get any better, could it??
Walking in was like walking into my childhood. Trinkets, clocks and ornaments galore from the kitchens of my grandmother, great aunts and mothers of my father's best friends lined the walls. This place is a regular shrine to old New England kitsch. It was wicked awesome!!! I wish we had taken pictures, but this is close enough for a day trip to go back and visit...... the walls are lined with 20th century travel souvenirs - plates, cups, clocks, from every state. Those Felix the Cat clocks with the moving eyes and tail, teapot clocks, copper jello tins (my mom still has those in her kitchen) and tin trays from Cape Cod, Vermont and the White Mountains of New Hampshire. Out front where you order your food, the walls are covered with those paint-by-number scenes your grandparents helped you paint when you were a kid in the 60's and 70's. My mind was having a seriously fun time remembering the scenes and times with my grandparents. The perfect stop on a roadtrip west. Oh yes, the food was awesome, the beer tasty and refreshing. I had the black bean burger while big eater had the pulled pork bbq, and a sweet plum ice cream cone. We got some chocolate chip cookies for our food stash and ate them the next day.........to die for!
