Punta del Diablo, Uruguay

Punta del Diablo is a beautiful, very wind swept fishing village four and a half hours to the east of Montvideo. We had been promised a brand new, fully functioning youth hostel in a remote village from where we wound travel slowly back west after three days enjoying the peace. Punta del Diablo is remote but the developers have arrived- the hostel being one of the things they are developing...still. After a first night listening to a few drunk students playing table football, we sat in a bar enjoying a beer when a couple we had met at breakfast that morning spotted us and came over to tell us they had found beautiful, Maldives-esque cabins right on the beach. And cheaper than the hostel to boot! Heaven! We forgot the travelling back down the coast slowly and stayed in Punta del Diablo for five nights...
