Hi everyone,

We´re in Rio , and so far it has been busy busy. Rio´s a strange place, very beautiful in parts, with extreme poverty right next door. There´s a massive cultural mix and it is very hot and humid. We´ve been staying in Ipanema (yet to meet the girl), which is Rio´s equivalent of Kensington, just with a very nice beach.. Our hostel was a bit grotty though, with very loud building work going on at stupid times. We´ve moved to Copacabana (and consequently can´t stop humming the tune!) for a couple of days - we´re in a cheap hotel for some much needed air con. It seems most places in Rio are booked out as The Police are coming to town on the weekend, which is apparently a momentous event...

We´ve pretty much explored the key touristy aspects of the city (the statue of the big man, the downtown architecture and Ipanema/Copacabana), so will be spending our final three days in Rio relaxing on the beach / by the pool. We´re slowly adjusting to the pace of life and having nothing we need to do, but I think it will take a bit longer to fully de-stress! It´s been fun though, and we´ve met some nice people amongst watching someone surf on a toilet seat across the swimming pool, encounters with prostitutes (not that kind of encounter!), braving the public transport and having a couple of drinks too many!

We fly to Montevideo on Monday when we have 11 days in Uruguay , a country where it seems there isn´t much to do except relax and enjoy the weather, so we´re looking forward to that.
