Buenos Dias from San Jose!

Already inspired to write, I am sat in the garden of my new Costa Rican family for the next week, Carlos has showed me around his garden. There is a banana tree, aloe vera plant growing, tangerine, peach and sugar cane. He tells me that the other families next door don't have gardens and he is very proud about his. Maria is his wife and they have been married for forty five years and receiving foreigners like me for twenty. I am definitely in safe and experienced hands and I told Carlos I am happy and I truly feel it.

It was quite a long journey here yesterday flight from London to Madrid, twice I felt my nerves hit me, once when my Dad and I said goodbye at the passport control and again when I walked up the gangway to the board the plane from London, tears welling up in my eyes and a nervous feeling I never felt before but this was all with excitement about what I was about to begin. About 20 hours travel time later I was picked up from the airport and driven to the host family home. The organisation I arranged this with had given me a file about my family and some rules of living there, not to raid their fridge or bring strangers back to their home all the normal respectful rules you would abide by when visiting someones home. The weather was humid and overcast when I arrived and around twenty degrees, but you could still see the waves of blue sky interspersed with the big puffy clouds. Traffic was chaotic it was rush hour around four to six pm every day here in San Jose, as we got nearer to the centre of the city we passed a large train station people waiting to go home for their weekend, and as we turned a corner sharply a train was coming towards us on the same street in the middle of the road, honking on it's horn and flashing 'I am coming cars, get out the way or I will smash you!' I was laughing this was mad but I was somewhere very different and that is what I wanted to get out of my travel experience.

I was very welcomed by everyone and the family Carlos and Maria, I also met two other foreigners staying here Kevin from America born in Germany and Charlotte, yes Charlotte! from Belgium both eighteen years old and on breaks out before they start their university studies. My first dinner here was a spaghetti with peas, some kind of mashed up meat I think beef and chilli sauce, when I learn more Spanish I will ask more questions to my host family. I showered and did a bit of unpacking in the room I am sharing with Charlotte and shortly went to sleep to get over the tiredness.
Today is the start of my adventure and journey, I am going to take it easy and relax, go at the pace of the Costa Rican life and see where it takes me.

They have an expression here, Pura Vida, Pura vida literally means Pura = pure and vida = life, so basically the meaning is "this is living!", "going great", "real living","Awesome!" or "cool! It's a common phrase spoken by Costa Ricans and the expats here and can be used as a greeting or farewell or just express what you are thinking.

So with that Pura Vida everyone!!
