Arrived at my hostel for the next two nights - the Safari Inn - after 3am, (Tanzania is also an hour ahead of South Africa), due to the flight delay and then having to go through the long queues for the visa process, which was pretty amusing - you can stay for up to 90 days, as long as you pay in dollars. I had only $20 on me - and females have to pay $50 (men pay $100 - I think I overheard; I'm not sure how the double charge is justified). The guard seemed interested in the $20 but upon seeing it, decided the note was too old! Apparently money has a sell by date here: I was let through with the handwritten note on the back of my visa document: "will pay $50 upon departure."

I attempted to get some money changed into dollars at the airport, something I had been told to do at Johannesburg airport as it would be cheaper: I still have dirhams on me that I need to change into dollars - to do it in Johannesburg would have meant converting twice, once into rand, and then into dollars. But the man behind the counter looked very suspicious of my dirhams asking what they were, before pointing to a board that showed to five currencies converted: dirhams aren't on there. So today could be a hunt for money exchange, as well as trying to find some tourist information. I thought I may be able to pick up a few leaflets at the airport, but the airport is about as big as my hostel room, so it was a little optimistic of me. Still, I have a map of Dar es Salaam, which depending on my map skills (or lack of) may or may not prove useful.
