After another early start we arrived in Belize City, Belize is an English speaking country, its very strange to suddenmly see all the signs we are use3d to seeing in Spanish in English. What┤s even better is listening to the locals talk, they speak english but with such a heavy Carribean accent it sounds like a completely different language but with the odd word you can understand...very cool!
On the boat from Belize city we bumped into two people who were on the other truck during our time in Brazil, argentina and Chile it also turned out that teo other people from the truck were on the island already, small world!
Caye Caulker is a tiny island off the coast of Belize and makes a great place to explore Belize┤s world famous reefs. Getting off the island we were greeted with a postcard picture of a Carribean Island; turquoise water, white sand and Palm trees, this is going to be a good few days!
The next few days were spent thoroughly enjoying doing absolutely nothing, the beaches were nice, the water was warm and the weather was just about ok (its hurricane season so we werenĘt expecting too much sun).
One of the main reasons for us coming to Belize was for the reefs and the Blue Hole, so we planned to do a refresher course and then do the dives. However, there wasnĘt enough time to do a full refresher course and becuase Ellie is a more experienced diver she felt confident with just doing a quick refresher but I decided I would just snorkel.
The next day we were at the dive shop at 6:30 ready to go, the journey to the Lighthouse reef where the Blue who is took about 2 and a half hours, and it was very rough, neither of us were sck though luckily. The first stop was the Blue Hole itself, EllieĘs dive was to 40m to see the stalagtites and sharks that the Blue Hole is so famous for. My snorkelling was also amazing, the corals and fish are so abundant and colourful...beautiful.
The second dive took Ellie to the Long Caye wall, here she saw Loads of Rays and tropical fish. I snorkelled around Half Moon Caye and also saw rays and a huge 6ft+ Nurse Shark.
The third and final stop took us both to the promisingly named "Aquarium". This stop was incredible the coral and fish were incredibly beautiful, I even saw a Turtle!
Caye Caulker is an awesome place, its so relaxing, the people are friendly and the island is beautiful. If you are ever in Belize make a stop there before a massive hotel ruins the island!
