The flight was awful. I am not a great flyer anyway but we had turbulence for about 2 hours and then it was really windy upon landing and at one point i thought we were all a goner. Probably wasn't as bad for other people but i don't like flying so any sort of unnecessary moment or random noises i tens to freak out which isn't so great when you were flying alone.
Also my ears or should i say my left ear gave me a lot of pain so when we eventually got off i couldn't hear a great deal and was in pain
We eventually made it to our hostel about 5 mins tram ride from the city. leigh who i had met at university has been living in Perth for the past year and had come to Melbourne to meet us since we was doing a couple of weeks of travel with a couple of other mates. He had booked us in a hostel called the Nunnery which was located next to a covent. It was big, lively and full of people. We met up with leigh an the others and checked in. Paying $34 a night was a tad difference to Thailand prices but here in Australia everything is expensive!
Our room was small and we had bunk beds sharing a room with 5 others. Top bunk sucks since you cant have your stuff next to you and you cant sit down. I was sharing a bunk with another Charlene who was travelling alone so I invited her out.
We got showered and headed to a nearby cafe and got a bite to eat. The cafe was quite funky and the staff were so down to earth. After we headed into the city via the free city tram which was cool. We saw the sights. Everything is big in Melbourne and they have some awesome buildings and random art sculptures. We headed for the Eureka tower where we went up on the 88th floor to the sky desk. The views were absolutely incredible and you could see the whole of Melbourne which was cool
After we watched some random gym
Artist in the street performing but it started to rain so we headed to a little side cafe and got a apple cider! Nicely done!
It was movie night in the hostel with free popcorn so we all chilled in the tv room and watched the hunger games.
The weather in Melbourne isn't too great. A tad warmer then say London but still jeans and a hoody type weather! Actually it was nice to bung on a pair or jeggings after being in shorts and sweating out fir the last month.
I tried to collect my bank card which i had sent up before i flew out. However they had cut up my card because it was over a month and they only keep cards for a month. Its annoying since when i did my application they asked my arrival date! Silly! Anyway managed to get a new card set up and it was to be delivered to a Sydney branch as we were moving on in a few days!
I even managed to save my lip piercing and now have a stud in! Hell yes!
I got a pre paid sim card which includes loads of minutes, texts and Internet however i seem to be ripping through the data limit! Annoying.
We checked out St Kilda and the beach. Because of the weather it wasn't too great but i bet it would be lovely on a sunny day!
We thought we would check out Melbourne's nightlife. Being just outside of the city in Fritzroy we headed ti a local pub and had a glass of wine. At $9 for a tiny glass there was no rushing the drink. We went with a girl called Pam who we were sharing a dorm with. She is a Kiwi and is currently working in Melbourne. She was a nice girl and we chatted over a few expensive drinks!
Leigh took us to the graffiti block which was awesome. Apprently its the only place where you are allowed to graffiti. It is just a block covered in incredible art work. Every few days people would turn up paint over and then re do with a different design so the block was constantly changing.
With the nunnery hostel funny booked for the next few days we had to be out so we went looking for a room. We were going to stay in St Kilda but couldn't find much so we headed back to the city where some girl heard us talking and recommended Nomads hostel in the city. We went and checked it out and we decided to book in for the next couple of days. We also booked our flight to Sydney since it was cheaper than getting a train or bus which is crazy! We also booked the Neighbours tour for the following day! EPIC!
Charlie 3 (the new girl) booked Christmas and new years with us and decided to do the wast coast so she was soon becoming part of the wolf pack - The 3 Charlies!
Our dorm was nice and big and we all bagged the bottom bunk. We were sharing with three over males, Clemont from France, Van from Oz and Matt from the UK! All nice people who we had a laugh with! We have been pretty lucky so far with the people we have met and stayed with as they have all been sound.
It was quiz night in U bar which was next door to the hostel so out dorm headed over. We got a free drunk token and pints of snakebites were in offer at $6 so that was my night sorted! We took part in the pub quiz and came third which was impressive! A jug of beer was our prize! Met some cool people that night and some sleezey men too but i am use to that living in Lowestoft!
Everyone kept asking if i was a kiwi which was strange since i always assume people could tell im English but apparently not!
The music was quite old school so me and this guy from manchester busted some moves on the dance floor!
The neighbours tour probably wasn't worth the $50 we paid but I'm glad i did it. we got to meet Libby Kennedy and took pictures with the Ramsey street sign and our tour guide was hilarious so we had a giggle
Since we had to be out of the room by 10am the following day we decided to have a chilled evening. Van offered to cook us all food which was nice! We all sat round and stuff our faces and then chilled in the dorm and watched Cabin in the woods and boys in the hood!
We had booked Nomads hostel in Sydney for the next 5 days however they were fully booked the night we arrived so we decided we would just find somewhere for one night and then stat in Nomads fie the rest. Finding accommodation on a saturday night in Sydney was proving difficult. Hostel world and hostel bookers had no availability. Hotels seem to be all booked up and hostels seemed to laugh at asked when we made enquiries. With our flight just a few hours away we were currently homeless. In the end we had to go through a list of hostels in google and just ring up each hostel in hope. We eventually got a number of a hostel which had a triple room available so we booked that! Panic over!
Our flight to Sydney wad only a couple of hours away so we headed to the airport to continue our journey up the east coast!
