Day 10 - Sijaondoka Nairobi
Didn't quite make it out of NBO.  Instead I ate pizza, botched a repair to my suspension and washed some clothes (I know!).

Day 11 - Did make it!  No real idea where I was aiming to get to.  My itinerary claimed Thika to do a bit of walking, but I arrived there by 8am so decided to continue.  The next on the list was Chogoria, to go up Mt Kenya (or rather a bit of it).  I breakfasted just outside Embu - a feast of mandazi (large triangular doughnut [donut] which are much better in Kenya than in TZ), chapati and actual tea (not chai maziwa - minging [gross] tea made with milk not water). Embu is about 30 mins from Chogoria so I binned that and headed on up to Isiolo.

The roads were amazingly good and the scenery in the Central Highland region stunning - great, green and a word beginning with 'g' that means hilly.  Arrived Isiolo about 3 after a mammoth lunch (it was cow actually) where I got my 'nusu' and 'robo' confused and ordered enough food to feed a family of four.  I ate it of course.

Kenya is growing on me, even though I do still want to get out quick smart.  The best thing so far is 'kinyeji', which I am positive is colonial.  It is a mound of mashed potato with sweetcorn [corn] and sukuma greens in it.  It's brilliant.

Coming down from the highlands to the north of Kenya yielded some stunning views, a hint of what is to come: much less lush, tumulus strewn desert/savannah.  But, as always in Africa, BIG.  Isiolo has a very interesting feel.  Much more Arabian than elsewhere in Kenya (even the East coast where I always felt they were a bit more 'modern' arabic) and with a very frontier feel to it.  Every second person is chewing miraa (aka qat/quat/khat - stimulant twigs that it is traditional and very good luck to spit all over your interlocutor during conversation) Was feeling a bit dodgy [sick] so just had the two beers and went to bed.  The road ends here.  The adventure starts....

Now then!
Hope you got my message on your travel log? Just checking you did!
Charlie- sounds like your having a blast!! AS very painful one on the old ass though!! Ouch!! Otherwise you msut have seen some pretty amazing things I would imagine- on the road with just yourself for company-free as the wind! Wow!! Immensely proud old bean! Just look after yourself.
I can imagine the roads are shocking fella-but it sounds like you are managing admirably. Keep us posted on all your endeavours.

Grace sends you a big kiss and Sarah sends you plenty more. We are moving house next week which will be pretty crazy but will be great to have our own space. I have been working this summer running a summer camp in Guildford- up at 5;30am and get back at 8pm-ITS A LONG ASS DAY but it earns ok money and we need it. We saw Denise and Richard last weekend in the Isale of Wight and Sarah has had Leah come down already-she loved Grace.

Well fella-just off round to Sarahs brothers place for dinner and then hopefully gonna watch Liverpool Chelsea.

Take care and keep us posted on your travels. Grace is looking forwrad to meeting you!
Also just watched a DVD of our football match with the Veggie boys that Jonathan did for me-it was fantastic! You do this brilliant half time assessment about a good defence and off side trap but shocking midfield!!! Love it!

Cheers

LOve

Re: Now then!
Thanks for the message chap. Sounds like you've been worked hard this summer. Make sure you have some time to relax (and escape...just a little!). Good luck with the move and remember to watch out for those ferrets. They can give a very nasty nip you know.

C xx
