July 8th
Again with the rain........
From Klinge we cycled to Brugge with a
short detour to a wall city called Hulst. I'm not totally sure the
extra miles were worth it but, Chuck wanted to go there having seen
it on Google Earth. We seemed to dodge most of the rain clouds but,
did get it get a little wet at the end of the day. We are spending a
few days in Brugge. There are some museums we want to visit; the
diamond and chocolate, as well as the brewery. It's our 30th
aniversary so, we will have a nice dinner to celebrate.
Yesterday we rode into Brugge (1.5
miles) and took a canal boat tour. Our guide would first speak to us
in English, then in French and finally in Dutch. I don't know how he
keep everything straight. The half hour tour cost 14 euros or $17.22
US but, we felt that it was worth every cent.
We continue to be happy with our Third
Eye mirrors, L.L. Bean tent, Thermarest campmats and all our bike
equipment. I guess after 6 bicycle tour we have been able to distill
(Ops, thinking about the brewery later today) what works and doesn't.
It's always a adventure to get
groceries. So many new foods, cheeses and wine to try. Having two
meals at the tent holds down our costs and these trips over to
Europe, minus the airfare, costs us just slightly over what we would
be spending a home.

Traveling by bike or train is certainly
more cost effective than by car. Diesel, which most cars are here,
costs $5.13 a gallon and regular gas starts at $5.89. So, don't
complain too much in the states about the price of fuel.
We are about 6 miles from the North Sea
and tomorrow we most likely will head out to the roads that parallel
cost. We are looking forward to France.
