After departing the Cruise Ship Terminal this morning (and saying goodbye to the lush part of our journey), we made our way to the Venice train station and headed for Milan.  Most people would visit Milan to laze in the shadows of 13th century buildings, or shop at the finest boutiques in the world, but Sean and I are not ordinary people ... we are geeks!  Geeks head straight for the Museo Nazionale Della Scienza E Della Tecnologia "Leonardo Da Vinci"

The museum is absolutely HUGE, and well worth the E8/person admission. It is truly amazing what one person thought up.  There are models of most of Da Vinci's machines, as taken from his drawings in his notebooks, as well as areas dedicated to other facets of science and technology -- most of which Da Vinci's early work had an ipact on.  I found myself identifying with Da Vinci a little. I, too, have a hundred notebooks filled with ideas and drawings of things I've invented, formulas for ways of doing things more efficiently, and lists of things that would be incoherent to anyone but myself.  I wonder if some day someone will discover my notebooks and realize I was brilliant.  Maybe the Mona Lisa wasn't a self-portrait at all ... maybe it was a picture of me!  ha ha ha

It took us hours to get through the whole museum, and then we headed for the geographicla and spiritual centre of Milan -- the Duomo.  THis 3rd largest church in the world was begun in 1386 and completed in 1809 (hmm ... that's how long it seems some of our home renovations take to finish)! From the Duomo, you can walk along the Galleria Vittorio Emanuele II where light pours through through a 48 m cupola on to the five stories of ritzy shops below. Like true tourists, we took our turns spinning on the mosiac bull three times for luck -- a ritual shared by many as it was hard to get in there and make your wish!
