Flag of El Salvador  ,
Thursday, February 4, 2010

The first thing that struck me as the plane came into San Salvador was the beauty of it. Endless sandy beaches sprawled into the distance, tropical greenery lay across the mountainous floor, and the imposing volcano that loomed over the city. Yep, its a bit different to the midlands.

Getting a taxi into the city was child's play and my attempts at Spanish with the driver we're well received, although fairly ridiculous (all i can say is that i have two brothers). We stayed in the student area around Boulevard Los Heroes which was really nice. The streets were tidy, full of flowers and little shops built into people's homes. We took our first taste of El Salvador in the form of Papusas, fried wheat things with various fillings, which were tasty and cheap at twice the price for a mere $1 for 3.

And thats pretty much it. Having travelled for 32 hours, i was a little tired and fell asleep at 6pm, not to awake for another 12 hours. The hostel, by the way, was a bit rough and overpriced. It was literally just a room with a bed and shower with no hot water which actually turned out to be quite refreshing given the 30 degrees of heat. Still, its El Salvador, i wasn't expecting the Ritz.

On a side note, everywhere i read said that its supposed to be a rough city. However, it seemed pleasant to me with locals eager to say hello. But yes, a lot of people were carrying guns which seemed to scare Nicci. Girls eh?

Next stop, Suchitoto...
