Up at 4:00 to get ready to head back to Aus, after showers and coffee we were in the car by 4:45. Arrived at BWI airport around 5:30 and bid farewell to JRob, we really appreciated him putting us up for a few days and I'm sure he'll now be looking forward to a rest.
The airport was full of military personnel, heading home and we just had to join the queue. We couldn't see our flight on the board but there was one for San Francisco at that time and our itnerary said we would be going via SF. The desk staff called up people for this flight so they could jump the queue as time was getting tight. By the time we got to the counter we were advised that our flight had left at 6:07am and we had received no notification. We were directed to another counter and they managed to get us on another flight but it was departing from Washington Dulles Airport at 2:30 pm, lucky we had some time up our sleeves.
We were given a cab voucher to get us to the airport and couple of $10 meal vouchers each, we hopped a cab about 7:30 and it only took about an hour to get to Dulles. Our check in went through without a hitch and then it was just the waiting game, lucky the terminal had a smoking lounge. We had lunch at an Irish Pub in the terminal courtesy of our United meal vouchers and then headed to our gate. They loaded us on the plane, however the sky outside was looking pretty ominous, eventually we got clearance to hit the tarmac for take off which took a while. Our take off was pretty rough and 'The Chang' was packing pants, the plane was bouncing everywhere. It soon calmed down and then we just had to put up with disrepectful passengers for about 5 hours, some people could do with a good punch in the head.
Arrived at LAX around 6:00 pm for our 10:20 flight, we just wandered around the terminal, surfed the net and had a feed at Carls Jnr on our vouchers. We pretty much boarded on time but were stuck at the gate for 2 hours because the plane was overloaded, by this stage we're just about over it. Finally we were in the air about midday, the flight to Sydney was pretty good apart from being so long. We even managed to get some sleep in. Landed in Sydney about 8:30am and was back on the Melbourne plane before 10:00.
Got off the plane in Tulla by 11:00 and headed on through customs, no hiccups. I went through a different gate than Chang but quickly found him embrcing a teary KezBags. I went outside for a desperately needed cigarette and gave Deb a call. Chang and Kez went to the carpark and Deb and Morgy arrived to pick me up only a few minutes later.
We are both so glad to be home, however we will miss our U.S. friends but we have memories that will last us a lifetime.
