We didn't have to meet my bro in Prospect, about 1-1/2 hours down the hwy, until noon so we had some time to kill. Vonnie got out the scissors and took a couple inches off of my mop of hair. Feels good.

We drove down to Prospect. The sites improve ten-fold the farther west you head into Oregon. We pulled into this park area right off the main street that runs through town. Some dirtballs came over from out of the woods and asked us for rolling papers. Prospect is a real small town off hwy 62, sort of between Crater Lake and Medford. There are a bunch of creeks that run through this area as well as a fork of the Rogue. Lots of trails rove through there and you can swim and/or check out some different waterfalls. We’ve been here before. It was a couple of years ago and we had hiked down to one of the waterfalls.

Todd and family met us around 1pm. It was great to see them and Vi was so stoked to finally get to hang with her cousins, Tyda and Sydney. We decided to grab some lunch at the local diner/tavern. Here I had some of the best BBQ ribs of the trip. After lunch, we all took a walk out one of the trails. We followed a creek (Red Blanket Creek maybe?) and after a while it turned into a multi-level falls. We waded around and Chula did some swimming/fishing.

We had an 1-1/2 drive into Grants Pass and pulled into my Dad’s place before dark. Violet hopped in with her cousins and went back to their house to stay with them for the night. My Dad’s got a little bit of land with a nice pad cleared out for us to pull the trailer into. We planned to stay here for 5 or 6 days. This would be our longest stay of the trip. It felt good to unhook and set up camp. It was good to catch up with my Pop and Stepmom after the long roadtrip. I was glad I was able to help him out with a couple of chores while we were freeloading on their property. We’ve been up to Oregon several times but this was to be one of our funnest visits. Here are some of the hi-lights….

We spent the day at one of the greatest swimming holes. About 30 miles from Grants Pass on the Illinois River. We had not been to this spot before. They have a real nice rock jump, a great beach area and deep crystal clear water. Chula logged some hours fishing this zone and she enjoyed some sushi after catching one, grossing out some onlookers in the process.

We finally paid a visit to the Oregon Caves National Monument. (the NP Pass comes through for us again) Something we’ve always talked about doing but never got around to it. The caves weren’t as cool as some of the others we’ve visited but there are some hikes to do around the area and they have a pretty awesome lodge you can stay at on the mountain.

After working with my little square Weber bbq for 2 months it was great to finally have access to a full size grill. My Dad took me over to a local butcher and purchased some meat and I was able to smoke a couple racks of spare ribs on one evening. We partook in some beers and it was a great night of visiting and shooting the shit with the family.

Vonnie and I had been kicking around the idea of renting a raft for the day and shooting some rapids on the Rogue River. So after some research we located a place in Galice that would rent us the gear and shuttle us to a spot above Hellgate (a deep canyon on the river). We got this 10 man raft that fit us all in it. (Todd, Lichin, Vonnie and I and 3 kids). We let the people know we were rookies and they put us in a class I and II stretch of the river. It was a great 7 mile run and we did get tossed around quite a bit. Took on plenty of water and all got soaked several times. So fun. We actually returned to Galice with all kids still aboard! And we only ran into 2 boulders and a tree along the way. Not bad for a bunch of rooks!

Violet will be starting middle school this year. Her orientation is this Friday and we are planning on making it back home for that. We’ll be leaving here Thursday morning for a long drive home. I’ll be making a few more entries in this blog to sum up the trip.
