We can check another one off our list of things to see. Vonnie and I both agreed that we would never have made a special trip up here to view Mt Rushmore but since it is on our way home....what the hell.

Along our drive through South Dakota we are definitely aware that we are heading toward Sturgis where the huge biker rally occurs every year. This year being their 70th anniversary. Bikers are everywhere and the event doesn't even start for another week. Lots of big rigs and tour buses pulling trailers full of bikes down the highway. We were told by locals that the airport fills with private jets that have bikes shipped in for this event! I was told the event normally will draw 1/2 a million visitors. There is talk that they are expecting close to 700,000 heads for this one! Anyway....lots of bikes on the road here.

On our way through the state we took the scenic route through the Badlands National Park.    We just wanted to see some stuff but not do any hikes. It was cool to check out but after seeing Zion in Utah we weren't overly excited. It was some odd and rugged looking landscape though. There are lots of trails and caves to explore around here. We walked and climbed around a little bit on the rock and snapped some pictures. Vi is over the sightseeing and just wants to get to Oregon to visit her cousins. And she can't wait to get home and start middle school. I'm constantly pissing her off by telling her to look at something out the window!

After the Badlands we pulled into this really crappy tourist trap town called Wall. We had been folowing the billboards for the last 200 miles (Heavy advertising. About 1 sign every 5 miles it seemmed like!) for this place so we felt like we had to check it out. The couriosity was getting to us. Here we had a fairly lousy lunch with even worse service. The little town was packed to the brim with tourists. Most looked just as bummed as we were to be there. We left there and drove on to see Mt Rushmore up in the Black Hills. It started to rain and thunder as we were walking up to the Memorial so we had some dramatic views of it. The Black Hills are really beautiful country. Reminds us of the Sierra's a little. Check the before and after pics of the memorial.

We checked into an RV park off of the I90 in this town called Black Hawk. It's nice here, cheap ($17 with our discount), full hookups, good wifi and a decent laundry room. Vonnie knocked out a lot of our laundry this evening.
