Not to sound too negative about NM but, in our opinion, Taos was boring. For some reason I was expecting something like Truckee up in the Sierras (near Tahoe). That was not the case. The surrounding area is very dry and lacking forest. Considering the elevation is about 7000', I believe, I was expecting more trees. Our RV park was overpriced too. When we drove into town I had to pay $5 to park my truck near the little plaza! It is a very touristy town. If you like Indian art and jewelry then there is about 500 stores selling that. We checked out a little brewery there, called Eske's, and I got a sampler.  The place seemed pretty cool. Kind of a hippie(ish) crowd. It seems like there is a big white water rafting/kayaking draw here. Unfortunately, all but one of the beers were bad. Really lacking in hops. These guys do make a really good chili beer, though, and we're fans of the (hard to come by) chili beers. We walked around the plaza for a bit then went to this pizza joint up the street more. I think it was called Outback Pizza or something like that. Anyway, damn good pizza. So if you ever have the misfortune of finding yourself in Taos, NM then skip the brew pub and the $5 parking fee and head up the street more to this place.

I know this town is famous for some reason or another. Not sure why. I guess Dennis Hopper's funeral was a few weeks ago just down the street from where we stayed. I think he was a Taos local. Maybe he liked Indian stuff. I asked some locals what we should do while we were there. Most said there wasn't much to do really until ski season, when the resort opens up on the mountain. One girl said " I'm not sure why anyone would want to come here in the Summer unless they were old."! I'm not sure what that means but I thought it was funny. I asked her what she does and she said she likes to hike in the mountains with her friends and drink beer. Pretty funny. I thought about maybe doing a little trail hike but the scenery was pretty weak. I must say, the Rio Grande runs close by Taos. It looked pretty nice for fishing and rafting both.

I thought this sign was funny. I don't know why. This is a McDonalds damnit!
