This weekend we went to Achill Island, which is the largest island off of Ireland. It is in Co. Mayo which is the next county north of Co. Galway. The island is 25 miles long, and is connected to Ireland by a short bridge. We stayed at the only hostel on the Island, the Valley House. This hostel is an old English Manor. The hostel used to be a hotel. This island is really out there, the only restaurant was 10 miles away and off the island. The next day it was raining and luckily the Hostel runner's father, Roger asked Pat and me if we cared to join him to the supermarket. The supermarket was what we would call a 7/11 that also had the post office in it. Once Roger and us were done with business Roger wanted to have some fun, and he took us for a tour of the Island. He arrived on the island in 1946, when he was 19 and he started the hotel. On the tour he showed us the mountains and beaches on the island, including one secluded one that he and his siblings used to go to and there was only a foot path to it at that time. He also showed us the large lake on the island that in up in the mountains (he claims that it is the cleanest water in all of Europe). After the tour with Roger, we decided to take a walk to the beach. This island is defiantly somewhere that I would want to come back to in warmer weather.
