Today Katie, Taylor, Craig and I went to Bratislava. We thought it would be a fun place to go for a day because it's only an hour away. It's a new city and a new country. We really wanted to take the ferry there. There is a ferry called the twin city liner that leaves from Vienna on the Danube river and goes to Bratislava which is also on the Danube river. The earliest ferry we could take left at 12:30. We bought our tickets at like 11:00 and then we hung out in a cafe until we had to catch our ferry. It was a pretty small ferry. It kind of felt like the inside of a plane because there were three rows on seats two along the edge and one in the center. We found seats and only sat in them until the ferry started moving and then we went out on top of the ferry. It was such a cool perspective of the country. It was very windy on the ferry but it makes sense since we were going 60kph. I got some great pictures from there. The weather was decent too. It was cloudy but it wasn't cold or raining. Within no time it felt, we were pulling into Bratislava. We could see the large Bratislava castle up on the hill above the river as we came in. There were also a lot of larger cruise ships docked near where we were docking.
We had no expectations for Bratislava. We really just planned on going there and walking around and seeing things as they came up. We went up to the castle and saw it. It was very pretty and very large. While we were on the hill we could see very dark ominous clouds headed in our direction. We were hoping that they would just dodge us or be a very quick shower. As we were descending the hill though the rain began... and so did the lighting and thunder... Luckily three of us had brought our umbrellas. We got under an underpass for a couple minutes to regroup and eat a little something. We decided that the rain was probably not going to stop so we should just suck it up and try to see as much as we could amidst the rain. We went into a church for a minute. And then we kind of kept walking in what i assume was the old city. It was a very beautiful old looking city. I'm sure it's very beautiful when it's not down pouring. We then tried to find some place to possibly get something to eat. But since we didn't want to withdraw any money because they have a different currency we were trying to find some place that took credit cards. We couldn't find any place though so we eventually just decided to start walking towards the train station to get a train back to Vienna since it was starting to get cold and we were pretty much soaked. On our walk up to the train station, Craig's umbrella snapped in half. It was very funny. And then since we were walking on a sidewalk next to the road and the road was completely saturated and had puddles along the side, Craig got splashed by a couple cars driving by. Also very hilarious! We finally got to the train station. We bought tickets for the next train and waited for it. The train was leaving at 5pm. It took exactly an hour by train to get back to Vienna.
Over all it wasn't a bad day. I wish it wouldn't have rained for half the time we were in Bratislava. But the ferry was awesome and so was the castle. The city was beautiful even amidst the rain, so I can't even imagine how much more beautiful it would be in the sun. I think I would like to go back there some day if I ever get the chance.
