20/12/05: Arrived in Port Macquarie for a 3 day trip, til we head back to Sydney on the 23rd for Xmas and New Year! Bus journey a bit of a long haul - 8 hours, arrived late due to pre-Christmas traffic on the freeways. Gav picked us up, and we drove back to Laurieton, the little town outside Port Macquarie where he lives. Gav's vet practice was an eye-opener! - took out the frozen possum, galah and kookaburra to show us! And it was the first possum I had seen up close and personal! Met "the family": dogs Nikkie and Ochre; cats Nicky and Fred; the fish and pet Python and boa constrictor!
21/12/05: Gav gave us the use of his convertible, so cruised around town, visiting the look-out at Port Macquarie, in the local national park. The river - the Hastings, I think - cuts into the coastline, and there are a number of large lakes. Lots of rainforest and lush greenery - very beautiful, and hot, hot weather! I went for an early morning run and by 8.30am it was over 32'C - not so much a run but a crawl!
Drove into Port Macquarie and went to the Koala Hospital! - lots of little koalas with cute names, recovering from roadside traffic injuries and bush fire injuries. Little gravestones were very sad!
In the evening, Gav, Gordon and I drove back into town and went to one of the lovely restaurants at the harbourside for dinner.
22/12/05: Drive into town to the surfboard hire shop, and took our boards to Town Beach. Managed to actually stand up on my board for more than 3 seconds, on about my 50th attempt! - very hard work but good fun. Lots of big waves here and good for boogie boarding also.
Drove back to Laurieton around 2pm for the bus back to Sydney.
