Tuesday 17 July
Up early as usual and on the road past huge monument to something. Stopped at church for breakfast and dried the dry tents out in the sun. Lehel spotted a female cyclist going past and moved like a whippet to stop her. She refused the invitation to join us. Onto Miosei and found monument to Hungarian war crime in 1944 where 31 local escaping forced labour villagers were recaptured and shot in a house. 2 survived and the only house as the rest of the village was burnt leaving 125 families homeless. A lady showed us the way to a monument and then on our return gave us some water. On through quite industrial area where we stopped for a beer as it was so hot. Lehel fell asleep after drinking his beer. Started the climb to the Prislop pass finding monument to where the Tartars were stopped in a battle in 1707, the last Tartar invasion. Told Lehel it was about 3k to the top, but actually it was 9k up this classic alpine like pass. I got to the top and found a campsite and bar and when Lehel arrived 40m later we decided to stay the night. Set the tent up while Lehel cooked and then talked to everyone in sight. I felt anti-social so went for a walk up a nearby hill with great views and met a czech couple for a nice chat. Strange concrete structures at the top, probably military. Met a few gypsy children selling berries and they showed off counting in English, before the returned to there camp in the forest. Drank until 11 not really speaking to the other campers although a bit of verbal sparring with a Austrian biker and to bed where Lehel had been for an hour. Generator was rather loud so problems getting to sleep.
