Thursday 12 July
Woke up to see we're in a beautiful lake but surrounded by rubbish, mostly plastic bottles. Said good-bye to fisherman who had only caught 3 fish all night. Went to local shop and sat outside on table and chairs eating breakfast. Back on bike but after a few k it started to rain so Lehel suggested we shelter by a local supermarket as he had no wet weather wear. There was quite a few rough looking Hungarian speaking men who invited us to join them in the dry and then for a large vodka and it was only 10am. They were all wobbling drunk, so lots of laughter and life stories, having to drag ourselves away only after the man who had brought us a drink asked for money. We gave him some so he'd made a small profit and we continued cycling slightly sloshed but warm, onto castle from Austro-Hungarian empire up on a promontory near Mukacheve with great views. Had a quick look round town and then down cycle sized pot holed main road past another Hungarian war monument. Had some food and beer in a small religious park. Onto better but busier road and Lehel complained he preferred the other side of the river where it was quieter. I just wanted to kill the k's and find a quiet place to camp, so a battle for control already. Turned off main road into very rural area, with lots of people sitting on road side home made benches watching the world go by. Found somewhere to camp up a hill overlooking spa hotel and various aerials. Later Lehel demonstrated the way to defecate when camping, first digging a hole with a stick, I nicknamed the shit stick. Went to bed once dark.
