Wed 7 June
Drove down to brothers where mother was staying to drop car off after going to my last circuit training session for a while...big good byes to Derek.
Thu 8 June
The trip to Waterloo went smoothly - train cancelled. Virgin managed to get a passing train to stop so only spent 1hr 20m at Rugby station watching network rail boys moving a few sleepers and little else. Check in at Waterloo went smoothly - picked out as a potential football hooligan. At crucial stage Robs solicitor phoned to make sure I was turning up in court. After a bit of bullshit (saying I was only going for 2 weeks) the copper gave me a red card to say I'd passed - strange. Got into Belgium no problems. Met a Southampton fan on the train from Brussels to Leige and he passed the time telling me Spitfires were made in Southampton - I held my tongue. Walked the 4k to the hostel, but made the mistake of asking someone directions. The locals only spoke French and it turned out I was right near the place but they sent me the wrong way. The warden was most helpful after spotting my pub list he marked them on a map before I'd even checked in. Had a Chimay in the hostel, then went and did all 6 pubs on the list, but only met one English speaker, although I heard some Brits on the street asking for a whore house. Texted Rob in Frankfurt who was sitting in front of 35ft TV screen in the river, getting pissed with loads of England fans singing WW2 songs. Went to bed drunk but got woke up by a Frenchman shouting and shaking the bunk guess I was snoring.
Fri 9 June
Woke at 8, bed dry, breakfast then 6k run. Short of time to catch the 1121 to Cologne. Found room locked and queue at reception. Eventually got into room, showered and route marched to station, got lost and just made the train with minutes to spare. Lots of Police about as the next leg crosses border, so I sat in the vestibule with another Morrocan bloke. When the police came to check his passport he only had a photocopy and after a few phone calls and discussions they hand cuffed him behind his back and turfed him off the train at Aachen. Loads of Brits on the train now taking the piss and playing top trumps.
