Mon 12 June
Woke up at 10.30, usual breakfast, then 10k run round the forest. Really bad groin pains again, trying to run through it. Have I a hernia? Decided to try and get in Italy Ghana game which Hary was going to with work on a corporate. Walked to the ground arriving 3 hours before kick off, bumped straight into a tout offering a ticket for €200. I decided to see what the situation was round the ground so walked round the whole fenced off perimeter, but saw no touts. Even went to the ticket office but theyd sold out, so went to pay the €200. Walked all the way back but the tout had gone. Went for a drink in BG then went walkabout, fortunately found another tout selling for only €120. No passport needed, original price €35 from the Ghana footy association whereas the €200 one (origianal price €100) was from Italian footy association. Fantastic atmosphere outside the ground and it so happened that the Italian and Ghanan team coaches came right passed my entry point. My camera screen stopped working so just took pictures anyway with the hope that the rest of the camera was. The police had to get the horses involved to clear a path. Security check was quite thorough with a body search and then onto a machine with a green and red light on. Heart stopping moment but then great got green light. 43,000 seater stadium looked impressive, saw the end of the USA Czech game on big sreen inside. Food and drink opportunities were very Americanised (popcorn, coke, budwiesser, macdonalds) but fortunately I found a reasonably priced bratwurst seller. Brought a water and had to pay a €1 deposit on the world cup plastic glass, which I noticed were lying all over the place, so that paid for the food and drink...once a tramp always a tramp. The view and game were good luckily and it was great been with the Ghana fans constant drum beat and causing security a few problems, just like a Saturday afternoon in Accra. Most of the Ghana fans were expats although I met one who claimed his brother had come from Ghana. Wonder if he'll go back? After the game walked back to Harrys through a massive police presence all rioted up. Found Harrys local BG was still open so met him after he'd polished off all the wine at the hospitality tent by which time I'd downed 3 wheat beers.
