Fri 9 June
Cologne station was buzzing with all different nationalities. A giant mural had been painted on the ceiling at the entrance to the station. Walked round the outside of the cathedral with lots of inter fan photos going on. Then back into the station to catch the ICE train. While waiting had a bottle thrown at me by England fans from another platform. The ICE train was very swish. Sat next to soldier and another local. Before the train even sets off the soldier starts smoking. I gave him the daggers (sic) and then the other guy lights up. In fact the carriage starts smoking. I guess its because Cologne is a non-smoking station so they were gasping. On reading the train information leaflet two of the seven carriages are smoking and I had found one of them by accident. Soldier had 5 and the other bloke had 7 for a 2h 40m journey and they were asleep most of the time. The soldier was reading what I can only describe as a field and trek book for the army. All different devices to kill people. Do they have to buy their own kit? The marshalling yards in Hamm were absolutely massive, about 50 or 60 tracks wide, all mostly redundant it seemed. Had a lot of people coming into our carriage, having a fag then going back to their own where it was obviously more pleasant. The info display at the end of the carriage has a speedometer the most it showed was 199kph, these are slow tracks apparently. Hanover station was rammed full of German fans all meeting to watch the game on a large screen.
