The only affordable flight by the time we booked it, included one overnight in Atlanta in the US. Yvonne happened to have a friend there, Andy, who was super sweet and invited us to stay in his home with his family. He picked us up from the airport as well.

Avoid American airports if you can!
Anyone looking into flight tickets for Nicaragua: try to avoid a stopover in the USA! First of all you need to pay for some ridiculous entry waiver and fill out long forms about your past as a drug trafficker or a prostitute. Second of all the customs hassle in American airports is hell. It took us 2.5 hours of queueing, two very thorough searches, questioning, and a long long hike through the airport to re-collect our luggage.... before we were finally through.

Andy's lovely home and family
We knew it would be around 25 degrees Centigrade in Nicaragua but in Atlanta it was snowing! It made everything look very pretty. Once we were through the airport hassle, it was so nice to get a glimpse of this part of the world. And staying in someone's home is always a great cultural experience.

Andy and his wife Judy had a beautiful grand home. They had prepared some lovely food for us. Andy was born and raised in Mexico. We had interesting conversations about work, countries and cultures, racism, schools, etc. Their adolescent son was the sweetest boy ever but in a cool way; so sociable, polite and funny.

We slept like babies and in the morning Andy took us back to the airport which was so sweet yet again since he needed to get up early especially and drive the 50 minute drive. On to our next adventures!
