Thursday 12th November 2009

So, back to Bangkok! This time I made a point of not staying in the 'Damrak of Bangkok', that horrible Khao San Road area, even though I was arriving there by bus and was supposed to meet friends there later.

The bus from Ko Chang came in from the eastern side of Bangkok and had to go all the way to the west through rush hour traffic (not that Bangkok is ever very quiet). It took about an hour and a half in Bangkok alone, and I kept being amazed at the sheer size of the city. It just keeps going on, and on, and on, and on. It's impossible to grasp it with your mind.

When I finally arrived in the touristy Khao San area I immediately got a taxi to take me to China Town which took another while but was all worth it!

China Town
Riverview Guesthouse was great! And China Town was also amazing. A little labyrinth-like street leads up to the hotel. It's in an area full of car part shops, restaurants and outdoor eateries and  other shops. I was on the 7th floor with great views.

After settling in I took a tuk-tuk back to Khao San to meet up with the friends I had made a month earlier: Jules, Kimm and Aimee. We had good laughs as before, and had dinner at an Indian restaurant.

Friday 13th November 2009

On Friday I had lunch in China Town and went for a boat ride on the river using the public transport boats. And - why not - a massage.

I loved China Town so much and it started me thinking of all the other China Towns across the globe... and that I might make it a theme of future travels: try to stay in every China Town I can find, or at least visit / eat there.

Out clubbing
Also went out to E-fun again on Friday. It was not as crowded as that Saturday last month but still fun! Took a while to get in the party mood but then did plenty of silly dancing, and they had some cool performances again.

Saturday 14th November 2009

Last day
Saturday had lunch in China Town again with Kimm and we were planning to go to a huuuuge market with Juliette and Chrys (apparently even if you went for 7 days in a row you still couldn't see all of it), but it started pouring down with tropical rain and the streets turned into rivers. So considered going to a cinema instead, but even that seemed too much hassle, because even getting from the restaurant to the taxi (2 meters) was impossible without getting completely soaked. So had another massage instead... :-)

Basically I ended my holiday by gazing out of the hotel at the view of Bangkok, that huge, crazy, smelly, multi-faceted, fun city. Staying in another area and knowing some people in town had given me a new perspective of the place and I now think back on Bangkok with fond memories. But I could never live there.
