The 1 1/2 hour paddle to Nine Mile Point in the Sechelt Inlet was a serene (albeit wavy) trip. There were hardly any boats on the water and the only sound generally heard was that of waves hitting surrounding rock faces and birds overhead. After having kayaked almost an hour we veered our bright yellow boats into a sheltered cove. Bold purple-coloured starfish clung to the rocks by the dozens. My love of kayaking was amplified. Then, only a few strokes later, we saw two seals watching us 3 metres from the water on a rock. Despite having hiked in Valhalla Provincial Park, canoeing Horne Lake and walking the beach in Tofino, our time near Sechelt has topped the list.
The campsite was a moderately steep climb from the shore, protected by trees and rock, overlooking the water. From the rock outcropping, we watched Tom the Seal pop his head out of the salty waters and bob in the waves only to disappear and resurface five minutes later. Tuesday night dumped steady rain on the campsite but we were in B.C, in unmatched scenery and had no complaints.
Wednesday morning we paddled back to the tiny marina, Tom popping up only feet away from our kayaks as we kept straining our necks to sear the image into our minds of trees and hills slowly retreating into the distance. I wish I could put that sight on paper but I may have experience with dropping cameras into water and I figured it best not to practice those skills once again.
A short distance from shore we turned the kayaks around and pointed their front ends in the direction of Nine Mile Point. I watched as the sun gently broke apart the grey clouds. The only thing to bring me back to shore was a sharp realization we had no more chocolate.
Back in Sechelt we found a fantastic small coffee and sandwich shop named Aaltjes. Great bread and fresh veggies with even better chocolate. I've since decided a kayaking trip in the Inlet followed by lunch at Aaljes should become a regular event. This was probably the only thought allowing me to momentarily leave.
