Our flight leaves at 10:15 am (Paris time) on Saturday and we arrive back in Kelowna at 7:30 pm. It sounds reasonable but there is a 9 hour time difference so it equates to about 18 hours of traveling!
Saturday
After 21 hours of travelling we finally touched down at the Kelowna airport. We are still filled with gratitude and emotion for the people in Perwez, Belgium who organized the memorial and monument commemoration for my Grandfather- the purpose for this trip. An entire piece of my family history has been captured and my Grandfather now has an identity that he never had before. The war has always seemed so distance and historic- irrelevant in today's world. But to the people of Perwez, Belgium it is woven into all of their lives and they have not forgotten. I still get choked up when I think about the family members singing the Canadian anthem at the cemetery or Benjamin telling the story of the last flight of the Lancaster 851 on the side of the road just metres from the crash sight. I hope one day to take my children to see the monument with their Grandfather's name and to tell them the story of how he gave his life to try and make this world a better, safer place. Thank you to the people of Perwez- especially Nelly and Benjamin- you have had an incredible, lasting impact in our lives! We will not forget you!

very cool. interesting how these types of experiences bring a reality to what feels like distant, almost movie like, knowledge.
