Coba ruins were beautiful, especially when you reach the top of the only ruins that you can climb. From atop, you could only see Coba forest and its two lakes. Supposedly, the whole site is humongous and to go to the end of the site, you would need to cover 8 km! At least that's what we were told as we wondered if we should rent bicycles. Finally we did, just for the fun of riding around the ruins. At the end of our tour, we realised that we could have walked all around the site... unless there was a secret path leading into the heart of the jungle. As a group of mexican cyclists passed us in the beginning of our visit, we ended up following them into a jungle path, which was a bit too much for our bicycles. Greg's tyre were punctured and we waited around the corner for help only to be asked to take the bike just next to us half an hour later.
Our stay in Coba village itself was not memorable.... there were only 3 hotels to choose to stay in Coba... all of which are undoubtedly overpriced... night life was very very limited and all the restaurants were also overpricing their food menu...all except one, which was just behind a basketball court. We found it out from another hotel-restaurant owner (Hotelito Sac-be), who was kind enough to mention it to us after Greg complained about his high prices. All in all, I wouldn't recommend anyone staying in Coba itself. If I had to choose, I would have prefered to pay the same or slightly more to stay in Tulum, where nightlife is not limited to watching Mexican TV.
