Leaving Tortuguero worked out surprisingly well considering I travelled independently - most people took the package of boat ride & shuttle into Cariari for an inflated price whereas I took the 11am water taxi to La Pavona ($3) and then the 1pm public bus to Cariari for $2. Not only saved money but was safer - no-one is likely to hold up the public bus with just one gringa aboard. Some German guys I met experienced an attempted hold up of their bus by 5 masked AK47 wielding guys who fired shots at the driver who'd decided to make a run (in the bus) for it! They were all lucky to escape intact though there were a few bulletholes in the bus!

My next destination was La Fortuna so decided to break the journey overnight in Puerto Viejo de Sarapiqui. So from Cariari to Guapiles was easy and then a 4pm bus to PV - both bus times & travel times are wildly different than LP says, so although the former didn't work in my favour the latter did and I managed to get to PV in daylight.

Didn't take long to check out the only 2 possible accomm options & end up at the cheapest, Cabinas Laura, which was still pricey at $16 a night. The town was not as rough as expected though there was little feeling of it's location at the confluence of 2 rivers - never saw them except when entering & leaving town!
