Here are some pictures from our lunchtime visit on Monday to the town hall in the nearby town of St. Maartensdijk. We all rode our bikes there and back, from Poortvliet. We were given a tour of the building (which dates back to 1628), plus learned a little bit of the local history. (They're now building a new town hall ... they hope to turn the present one into a restaurant to preserve the building.)
I also stopped to take some pictures of the Dutch countryside, during the return bike ride back to Poortvliet. This area in the Zeeland province is a farming area, dotted with small picturesque villages.
What I think we've found is that the Dutch people, including the kids and families that we're spending time with, are very much like us. We've both brought our kids up in church, in the midst of a secular culture. So our kids, on both sides, are very much alike (apart from the language ... and a great many of the Dutch kids speak some English).
I'm thinking that it will be different in the Czech republic ...
