Being in America really hits you when you have to jump in your car and start driving on the "wrong" side of the road.  If dodging the trams weren't hard enough, it was trying to work out which way to look ands who actually has right of way. Without too much hastle, however, we managed to find our way on to the almost endless stretch of freeway and hit the "open road" heading west towards Yosemite National Park. "Yosemite!", Its a funny word. It always conjured up images of Bugs Bunny, with "Yosemite Sam" jumping out of the TV screen. Yet, Yosemite is famous for a lot more than just one quirky cartoon character. Yosemite valley has some of the steepest cliffs in the world, such as El Capitan. The valley has been carved out by glaciers, and is looked upon by the famous peak of Half Dome. Not too mention the huge Sequoia trees at Mariposa, which was our first stop into this National Park.

You know you've reached a pretty popular tourist destination when little trams have to ferry you around from place to place. So reluctantly joining the horde of other tourists, on we hopped for our tour of the grove. A little bit corney, but at least it showed us a lot of the trees, with little effort. The diesel fumes wofting from the vehicle was another added "bonus". It was worth it though, because after disembarking and walking among the huge trees, you realise just how huge the trees really are. Surprisingly, once you got away from the main car park, there were very few people and it was nice to get some peace and quiet.

Thankfully it wasn't too far to Yosemite West, which was were we crashed for the night. It was such a contrast to the noisey streets of San Francisco. Our little log cabin, dubbed "Alpine View" was such a treat. Perfectly star-lit skies and such a quiet, peaceful air about the place. It formed our base for the two nights while we explored the valley and other places such as Glacier Point.
