It's raining. We are going to Helen anyway. I heard about Helen, Georgia 34 years ago. It is a town that the townspeople reconstructed it to look like a Bavarian village. March is not the best time of the year to go. Most everything is closed. However, I am looking forward to one day going here again during the summer months.
Our first stop is the Old Sautee Store in Sautee. The store originates from 1872 and is still doing business. The store carries Sugar Daddy suckers, fireballs and many other sweets that we had as children. Some of us purchased their Farmer's Cheese. It is delicious. Plus, we made other purchases.
Next, we stopped at the Stovall Covered Bridge. The original bridge was built in 1897 and was washed away. The next one was built in 1905. It is next to the road. Termites have damaged the wood.
We also stopped at Scarlett's Museum in Sautee. If you are a fan of Gone With the Wind, then you must stop at this museum and store.
Our next stop is the Anna Ruby Falls. We are on the trail, and it is raining. We don't let that stop us. We brought our umbrellas. It is a short hike - 1/4 mile to the falls. We also hiked on the Smith Creek trail for a short distance. The tallest fall is 163 feet.
Due to the continuing rain, we stopped at the History Museum of Sautee-Nacoochee. There are exhibits of the Cherokee Indians who inhabited this area, the white settlers, the slaves and their descendents, the discovery of gold, railroading, the lumber industry, and asbestos mining.
