Where I stayed
Volunteer House
We didn't make it to Robben Island on Sunday. It is winter here so the tides were too strong for the boat to sail. There really is a huge swell in the water around the bays, great for surfing but quite dangerous otherwise at this time of year. We had quite bad weather last week and it takes a few days for the tides to calm down.
We went to the V&A waterfront instead. It is really nice down there. Loads of street performers, bands playing and dancers so there is a really nice atmosphere. A real buzz. There are lots of very nice restaurants so we had a nice lunch sat outside overlooking the water. I saw a couple of seals swimming about in the harbour which was lovely.
Most of the other volunteers are doing a road trip this weekend along the garden route as they want to do a bungee jump. Initially I was going to go with them, not to bungee jump I hasten to add, but for the scenery etc but I have decided that I will go by myself another time. It will be a really long drive - 8 hours each day, in a cramped car with 19 year olds driving!!! On reflection better to pass!
So I will try for Robben Island again and if not then Paul (one of the other older volunteers who has also passed on the road trip!) and I will get the train to Simons Town and go to Boulder Beach to see the penguin colonies there. The weather has been much better since Sunday so hopefully Robben Island will be possible. Hopefully the trains will be running, there is a strike here and they were all out of service yesterday!
I am off school today. The other volunteers were all full of cold last week and sore throats and I thought I had avoided it but yesterday I woke up with a gravelly throat and by the middle of the day all my leg muscles felt really tired and I spent all last night shivering as I felt freezing. I do feel a bit better today but have got some flu remedy today and am just going to take a day out to try and get fully better. All the kids have runny noses and cough all over you all the time so going to school wouldn't help the situation I don't think!!!
Oh well off to take the S African version of lemsip!
