Stupidly, sometime over the last few days, I remember telling a group of travellers how, as much as South America has the potential to be dangerous, if you remain sensible you can avoid anything serious happening to you.  This was all about to change on the night of the 7th...

The night started slow, snoozing in a hammock and plotting a quiet night to leave me fresh for the arrival of some friends from Beunos Aires the following day.  A group from the hostel wondered down to Ipanema beach to check out a beach rave which strangly started before sunset.  From the moment we arrived we realised this was going to be a huge show,  DJ Tiesto was due on stage and upwards of 100,000 ravers had packed the beach.  It was superb, the music brilliant, the atmosphere amazing.

From that brilliant start the night went all shades of pear...  Firstly errors with drink cards at a bar had someone at the the hostel angry and rummaging through my locker, taking what ever currency they could get their hands on.  A cab driver, obviously in on the act, took myself and Rory, an Aussie bloke, on a magical mystery tour up through a dodgy part of town where police prompty pulled us over, searched us and planted a joint in the back seat of the cab - 150 Real each later we were free to go.  After scraping together the money and having a beer to try and digest what had just happened the two of us grabbed another beer and wondered down onto Copacabana to watch the sun come up.  Just to finish off the night, out of no where, three blokes came from behind us, grabbed me by the neck and waved knives in our faces demanding everything we had - they must have been disappointed the police had cleaned us out earlier.

As you can imagine today has been a lot better day than yesterday!  The arrival of Mads, Romy and Nat, amigas from Beunos Aires has definately bought a smile to my face.  After an understandably quiet one last night, curled up watching a few DVDs, the plan today is to try and get any rays the sun manages to squeeze through the clouds here in Rio and have a big one tonight.
